Mentoring

Practitioner mentoring and clinical supervision

The Centre for Integrative Sports Nutrition is dedicated to fostering practitioner development and progression throughout your professional career. The best practitioners, clinicians, and coaches all have personal mentors, even when well established in their careers. Imagine an elite athlete at the peak of their career “going it alone” – just like athletes need support, professionals without mentors may struggle to maintain optimal performance.

Throughout your career, different types of mentors may be needed. For example, if you are a sports nutritionist, or a practitioner wishing to specialise in this area, another sports nutritionist might be helpful. Additionally, seeking mentors trained in functional or integrative nutrition, exercise science, or psychology can be highly beneficial. Likewise, a business coach or mentor is invaluable since even the most skilled practitioners can become less effective if their business operations are inefficient.

Our mentorship programme offers a diverse range of professionals with unique qualifications and experiences to support your growth. Below is a list of our mentors, each with a description of their qualifications, experiences, and the services offered.

Ian Craig

MSc DipCNE INLPTA FBANT
Nutritional Therapist and Exercise Physiologist

Ian was initially trained in exercise physiology and strength and conditioning, which he applied in a 1-on-1 setting with personal training and coaching clients, ranging from recreational participants to elite athletes. Since retraining in nutritional therapy in the early 2000s, he has devoted much of his focus into developing the concept of integrative sport and exercise nutrition, meaning a dual role in education and clinical practice.

Having been a middle-distance runner, and competing in cycling and triathlon events, Ian works more with endurance athletes, recreational through to elite, although he has supported most sports groups over time. He also has extensive experience with chronic health cases, including gut dysfunction, autoimmunity and chronic fatigue, often within a sport and exercise context. His clinical supervision experience includes supporting students of nutrition, nutritional therapy and sports nutrition with their case study clients, and providing clinical and business mentoring to established health and exercise practitioners.

Simone do Carmo

MSci SENr CISNCert ISAK-1
Sport & Exercise Nutritionist and Exercise Physiologist

Since completing a five-year MSci degree, where she studied the complexities of human physiology and nutrition in sports labs, Simone has developed a true passion for her work as a registered sport and exercise nutritionist, personal trainer, writer and course coordinator at the Centre for Integrative Sports Nutrition. She works with a range of athletes, from recreational to competitive, focusing on improving health-based performance through a food-first, personalised and evidence-based approach.

With a background as both a sprinter and powerlifter, Simone’s client base and educational expertise cater to strength- and power-based athletes, as well as individuals across the lifespan who aim to maintain or gain skeletal muscle. She holds a particular interest in plant-based nutrition, Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), and menstrual cycle tracking – tailoring nutrition and training to align with an individual’s unique experiences around their cycle.

Simone offers comprehensive support to practitioners working with clients, providing mentoring and guidance in skill enhancement areas, such as dietary analysis and anthropometric assessments. Additionally, she assists with career planning and writing/editing support, ensuring professionals have the tools they need to succeed.

Rachel Jesson

B.Phys.Ed M.Phil - Health Coach and Certified Natural Food Chef

Rachel originally trained in physical education and sports science and psychology, which she applied into personal training work and to her own athletic career as a national South African triathlete. She has always had a contagious and passionate enthusiasm for sport, nourishing foods and optimal health, and since training as a certified natural plant-based chef, became a senior teacher at the School of Natural Cookery. She currently consults, coaches and lectures to groups and individuals on nutrient density, enhancing nutrient bioavailability and natural sports cookery.

Rachel is also a certified health coach, supporting clients 1-on-1 with a transformational journey, unlocking their potential and creating positive behaviour changes. Health coaching helps people to access what they already know, but may not realise they know: it’s about asking the right questions and allowing the client to find their own unique solutions. Her guidance with nutritional interventions and practical, food-focussed approaches has supported many under-nourished athletes. She has a remarkable way of helping individuals to improve their relationship with food plus associated mindfulness around food and their whole body.
