Beyond Supplements: A Sports Pharmacist’s Guide to Navigating WADA, Medications, and Emerging Performance Products – Sim Lee

As the use of sports supplements, prescription medications, and novel performance-enhancing products continues to evolve, sports nutrition professionals play an increasingly important role in helping athletes make safe, informed, and WADA-compliant decisions. However, distinguishing between permitted products, prohibited substances, contamination risks, and emerging ingredients can be challenging in a rapidly changing landscape.

This practical webinar, presented from the perspective of a sports pharmacist, will explore the critical intersection between sports nutrition, medication management, and anti-doping. Participants will learn how common medications – including treatments for asthma, pain, allergies, ADHD, and weight management – may affect an athlete’s anti-doping status and when referral to a pharmacist or sports physician is appropriate.

The session will also examine emerging supplements and performance products, including NAD⁺ boosters (NR and NMN), peptides, botanical extracts, and other novel ingredients that are gaining popularity among athletes. We will discuss the current scientific evidence, regulatory considerations, and potential anti-doping implications to help practitioners confidently evaluate new products before recommending them.

Finally, attendees will be introduced to a practical anti-doping toolkit that can be integrated into everyday practice. This includes strategies for assessing supplement risk, identifying high-risk ingredients, interpreting the WADA Prohibited List, using medication-checking resources such as Global DRO, and implementing documentation processes that support athlete safety and compliance.

By the end of this webinar, participants will have practical tools and greater confidence to minimise inadvertent doping risks, provide evidence-informed guidance, and collaborate effectively with pharmacists, sports physicians, and other members of the athlete support team. Whether you work with recreational, elite, or professional athletes, this session will strengthen your ability to support clean sport while optimising athlete health and performance.
