It is tempting to classify the study of immunology as the act of peering through a microscope and describing immune cells (‘us’) plus the bugs that inhabit our body (‘them’). However, if we consider widening our lens of examination, a picture of diverse evolutionary symbiosis begins to appear, which brings our intimate relationship with nature into much more significant focus.
Within the context of current human behaviour, Ian Craig dispels the delusion that we should be ‘battling’ with our bugs, but rather that we should be nurturing them as an act of self-compassion. Further, by sharing cutting edge virome and microbiome research, he will explore the topic of exercise immunology through a macroscopic lens of an athlete’s greater personal ecosystem.
