Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENR)

The Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENR) is a voluntary professional register designed to recognise and accredit suitably qualified and experienced individuals who are competent to work as Sport and Exercise Nutritionists with performance-oriented athletes, as well as with people engaging in physical activity, sport, and exercise for health. SENR serves as a nationally recognised quality mark in the United Kingdom for professionals working in sport and exercise nutrition, helping employers, clients, and the public to identify practitioners who meet established standards of practice.

The primary purpose of SENR is to promote high standards of service, education, and professional practice within this specialised field of sport and exercise nutrition practice. The register outlines the professional standards and core competencies expected of sport and exercise nutritionists, guiding curriculum development for relevant education and providing structured career pathways for aspiring practitioners. Registrants must agree to adhere to a strict Code of Professional Conduct, which ensures ethical practice and safeguards the quality of services delivered to clients.

SENR exists to support public protection, particularly for the sport-performance and physically active community, and to foster continuous professional development for individuals on the register. It also plays a key role in developing the profession and its knowledge base, helping to raise the profile and recognition of sport and exercise nutrition as a specialised discipline.

SENR has three pathways for practitioners to join the register:

  • Graduate – for individuals who have graduated from particular university courses
  • Practitioner – for well qualified and experienced practitioners, working in the field of sport and exercise nutrition
  • Academic – for experienced researchers and academics within the fields of sport and exercise science and nutrition

The register is jointly supported by dietitians, nutritionists, and sport and exercise scientists, and is administered by the British Dietetic Association on behalf of the SENR Board. Registered professionals can be found through the SENR directory, which allows users to search for practitioners by name, location, or specialist expertise.
