Our portfolio of courses have been designed to meet the needs of all integrative thinkers regardless of where they are on their journey.
The way we have structured our courses and modules through ‘dynamic learning’ means that each course can be studied in modular bite-sized chunks, fitting into the life of even the busiest working professional.
Our short course provides a great introduction to integrative sports nutrition, and is taught over four weeks. It is ideal for final-year students or newly qualified practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge in integrative sports nutrition, and incorporate the ethos that ‘health feeds performance’ into their thinking.
Our certificate course is aimed at those with a diploma or a degree, or relevant industry experience, who wish to take a deeper dive into the world of integrative sports nutrition. It is made up of two long base units and two shorter specialty units, which link together to form the Certificate of Integrative Sports Nutrition.
Our Level 7 diploma is an internationally accredited course and is equivalent to a postgraduate diploma, which can potentially lead onto a masters degree. It is made up of two long base units, four shorter specialty units, a case studies and mentoring study programme, and a capstone research project.
Additionally, any of our specialty modules can be studied for purposes of continuing professional development (CPD) or continuing educational units (CEUs). Simply select the module you’d like to study and contact us to register your interest.

MODULES BEING COMPLETED
Who's is it for?
Our portfolio of courses and modules are aimed at degree and diploma holders plus final-year students, ideally within the nutrition and/or exercise fields. However, acknowledging the fact that many great practitioners are not degree qualified, we also accept applications from individuals who can demonstrate a portfolio of sufficient prior knowledge and experience. Practitioner experience is a bonus in our programmes, but not a necessity.
Course attendees who are already functionally trained (such as nutritional therapists and functional medicine practitioners) will receive applied training within a sporting context.
Individuals who are already trained in a sporting context (such as sports dieticians and sports scientists) will get the opportunity to apply their existing knowledge within an applied integrative body systems perspective.
All course participants will have plenty of opportunity to develop their practitioner skills.
Courses
Our short course provides an introduction to Integrative Sports Nutrition at an accessible price!
The course is delivered fully online and consists of four weeks of immersive study and discussion: a live workshop is delivered each week (recorded in case you can’t make it), plus you have the chance to interact with your tutors and peers on our online educational platform.
This course is available for CPD study, or simply for personal interest.
Originally launched in 2018, this CISN Certification is our founding course, which has been designed to immerse you fully into integrative and personalised thinking within a sporting context. It is tailored to practitioners’ busy work-life schedules, and made as flexible as possible with our online learning options.
The Certification course comprises two larger mandatory units (Integrative Body Systems and Applied Performance Nutrition), each with eight lectures, plus a choice of two shorter speciality units, each with four lectures.
Within the course, there is the opportunity to take part in weekly workshops and online discussions to support your learning. Our case-study-based assignments will help you put your learning into practice.

INDIVIDUAL BASE UNITS
The first mandatory base unit of our certificate course is the cornerstone teaching of our integrative approach: it represents the fundamental ‘health feeds performance’ paradigm that we expect will end up coexisting with the prevailing quantitative ‘fuelling of performance’ focus in sports nutrition.
This unit explores how to support the health of our athletes’ physiological body systems under the increased pressure of exercise training and competitive sport.
This module can also be studied on its own for CPD/CEU purposes.
The second mandatory base unit of our certificate course explores the more traditional sports nutrition approach of ‘fuel for performance’ within sports nutrition. We ask students to apply their expansive mindset to this topic through a practical and contextualised lens.
What we recommend to our clients must make sense to their personal ecosystem; their genetics, their body systems, their psychology, their training patterns, and their overall life patterns and choices. At CISN we place a lot of emphasis on finding the appropriate evidence-based strategy for each individual client according to their own set of unique circumstances.
This module can also be studied on its own for CPD/CEU purposes.
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD/CEU)
Hypertrophy, or muscular growth, requires more than lifting big weights and eating lots of protein, although that is a good start!
Everything we do in our lives affects our anabolic/catabolic balance, thereby influencing our body's ability to maintain and increase muscle growth, support recovery and improve adaptation from training.
In this unit, you will learn about training and nutrition for hypertrophy, and gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the importance of body system approach (including the ‘gut-muscle axis’), to not only health, but also performance.
This module can also be studied as part of the Certificate course, or on its own for CPD/CEU purposes.
Next start date - Wednesday 10 January 2024 at 1pm UK time
Sport and exercise practitioners are now acutely aware that heavy exercise places an increased load on the gut and immune system.
As the gastrointestinal (GI) and immune systems are so closely intertwined and provide a portal to whole-body health, any interventions we utilise to support our digestive health will improve the functioning of both body systems and also improve performance.
In this unit, you will learn about the effects of exercise load on GI functioning, plus nutritional and clinical strategies that you can use in practice to assess and support GI and immune resilience.
This module can also be studied as part of the Certificate course, or on its own for CPD/CEU purposes.
Sports nutritionists mostly take, what might be described as, a one-dimensional view of energy provision: if we eat ‘x’ grams of carbs or fat, we gain ‘y’ units of energy.
However, we also need key micronutrients as cofactors to support the Krebs cycle and our mitochondria require a much deeper form of nourishment than simply fuel.
In this unit, you will learn how to develop and harness the mitochondrial potential of your athletic clients to a higher level through interventions that provide greater antioxidant support, microbiome health, and mental wellbeing.
This module can also be studied as part of the Certificate course, or on its own for CPD/CEU purposes.
Ergogenic strategies should be more than just supplements to boost performance. Every life choice we make influences our sporting performance, for better or worse.
In this unit, you will learn how to support an athlete’s performance by looking at their personal ecosystem of health, and how to identify and use nutritional ergogenic aids in clinical practice to improve your client's performance and safely achieve that competitive advantage!
This module can also be studied as part of the Certificate course, or on its own for CPD/CEU purposes.
Our signature natural sports cookery course will not only excite your taste buds, expand your culinary repertoire, and increase your confidence in the kitchen, but also help you deliver the very best advice to improve your athletes’ health-based performance.
You will learn the importance of food sourcing and energetics, how to supersize the nutrient density of foods, and how to create a balanced meal composition for an athlete using the language and values of intuitive cooking.
This course is truly one of a kind, and is available for anybody with an interest in this area to study as a standalone unit, or it can be chosen as one of your speciality units on our certificate course. It is taught by experienced Natural Chef Rachel Jesson.
