‘Clean sport’ is the phrase generally used to indicate a drug-free environment during athletic endeavour. That’s a really good starting point to support the health of our athletes! However, in nutrition circles, the phrase ‘clean eating’ would suggest that sports men and women could be coached to even higher levels of health.
Detoxification and biotransformation, the processes required to clear the many artificial substances consumed by 21st century athletes, are highly energy demanding, suggesting that many so-called ‘foods’, consumed for their high energy content, may actually compete for our bodies key resources. Since detoxification is dependent on base nutrients such as amino acids, B-vitamins, and antioxidants, non-clean eating ironically demands more of these nutrients from our diet – very much a catch-22 situation for the macronutrient-focussed athlete!
In this webinar, Ian describes detoxification for “clean sport”, detailing the phases of detoxification within the context of sporting nutritional demands. In particular, it should become clear how athletes end up with depleted antioxidant nutrients and enzyme systems, and why this can be highly disruptive to potential training adaptations. Ian then shares his favoured detoxification-supporting foods and nutrients, and he even offers a 3-week January detox regime for attendees!
